What is Motor Skills Therapy?

A structured OT-based intervention that develops both fine motor precision and gross motor strength in growing children.

Motor skills are the foundation of a child's ability to interact with the world — from holding a pencil and buttoning a shirt, to running, jumping, and maintaining balance. Fine motor skills refer to the precise movements of the hands and fingers required for writing, drawing, cutting, and self-care activities. Gross motor skills involve the large muscles of the body — coordination, balance, strength, and spatial awareness needed for physical activity and classroom posture.

When motor skills are delayed, children struggle with tasks that their peers find effortless. Handwriting is laboured and illegible. Buttons and zips become frustrating obstacles. Physical education becomes a source of anxiety rather than enjoyment. At Kocoon Junior, our Motor Skills program is an occupational therapy-based intervention that addresses both fine and gross motor development in a single, integrated program.

Every child begins with a detailed motor skills assessment that identifies specific areas of delay — grip strength, hand-eye coordination, bilateral coordination, core stability, and postural control. This assessment directly informs a personalised therapy plan targeting the exact skills that need development.

Sessions combine structured OT activities, sensory-motor exercises, and age-appropriate play-based tasks that are genuinely engaging for children. Parents receive a home activity program after every session — simple, equipment-free exercises that can be done daily to accelerate progress. All sessions are conducted in Gujarati, Hindi, or English based on the family's preference.

Signs Your Child May Have Motor Skill Delays

Motor skill delays affect school readiness, self-care, and physical confidence. Look for these signs in your child.

Fine Motor & Gross Motor Red Flags

Holds pencil with a fist grip or unusual position
Handwriting is very slow, laboured, or illegible
Cannot button, zip, or fasten independently at expected age
Struggles to use scissors, cutlery, or small objects
Trips, falls, or bumps into things more than other children
Poor balance — difficulty hopping, skipping, or standing on one leg
Avoids playground activities, climbing, or physical games
Tires quickly during physical activity; weak muscle tone

If 2 or more of these signs are consistently present, a free motor skills assessment is the right next step.

Our Motor Skills Therapy Approach

4 structured steps from assessment to measurable motor skill improvement

  1. Motor Skills Assessment

A comprehensive OT evaluation of fine motor precision, gross motor coordination, bilateral coordination, grip strength, core stability, and postural control. Parents and child both participate — we need to understand how motor challenges affect daily life at home and school.

  2. Personalised Motor Development Plan

A targeted therapy plan built around the specific motor skills identified in the assessment. Goals cover both fine and gross motor domains with clear monthly milestones. The plan is shared with parents so everyone understands what we are working toward and why.

  3. OT-Based Therapy Sessions

60-minute sessions combining structured OT activities, sensory-motor exercises, and play-based tasks targeting both fine and gross motor skill development. Sessions are progressive — building strength, precision, and coordination systematically over time.

  4. Home Exercise Program

After every session, parents receive a simple home activity program — exercises and activities that target the same motor skills practiced in the session. Daily home practice is the single biggest driver of rapid motor skill improvement.

A Real Family's Story

★★★★★

"Aryan's handwriting was so poor that his teacher could not read it. He also struggled with buttons and was being teased at school. After 10 weeks of Motor Skills therapy at Kocoon Junior, his handwriting is readable, he can button his shirt independently, and his confidence has improved enormously. The therapist gave us simple home exercises that took only 10–15 minutes a day — and the results have been remarkable."

Motor Skills — Common Questions

Fine motor skills involve precise movements of the small muscles in the hands and fingers — used for writing, drawing, buttoning clothes, and using cutlery. Gross motor skills involve the large muscles of the body — used for walking, running, jumping, climbing, and maintaining balance. Both are critical for school readiness and daily independence. Our Motor Skills program assesses and addresses both fine and gross motor development in every child.
Motor skill development follows predictable milestones. If your child is significantly behind — such as not walking independently by 18 months, unable to hold a pencil by age 4, or falling frequently — early intervention is strongly recommended. The earlier motor skill delays are identified and treated, the better the long-term outcomes for school performance, self-care, and physical confidence. Our free assessment identifies where your child stands relative to age-expected milestones.
Most children show measurable improvement within 8–12 weeks of consistent weekly sessions. Fine motor improvements like pencil grip and handwriting are typically visible within 6–8 weeks when home activities are practiced regularly. Gross motor improvements take slightly longer as they require muscle strengthening. Our therapists provide home exercise programs after every session to accelerate progress between appointments.
