What is Stammering — and Can It Be Treated?

Stammering is highly treatable. The earlier therapy begins, the better the outcome.

Stammering (also called stuttering) is a speech fluency disorder characterised by repetitions of sounds or syllables ("b-b-b-ball"), prolongations of sounds ("sssss-sun"), or blocks — where speech stops entirely for a moment. It often comes with visible physical tension — facial grimacing, eye blinking, or head movements while speaking.

Stammering is not caused by nervousness, low intelligence, or a parenting problem. It is a speech-motor coordination difficulty — the timing between the brain's speech planning and the muscles that produce speech is disrupted. It affects approximately 1% of the population. Many children go through normal developmental disfluency between ages 2–4 — but when stammering persists or worsens past age 4–5, specialist therapy is recommended.

At Kocoon Junior, our stammering therapy program combines fluency shaping techniques (breathing regulation, gentle onset, easy speech rate) with stuttering modification techniques (reducing tension at moments of blocks, desensitization) and confidence coaching — because stammering affects not just how a child speaks, but how freely they are willing to speak.

Many children who begin therapy young achieve completely fluent speech. For older children, therapy significantly reduces stammering and builds powerful strategies to speak confidently in all situations — so stammering no longer holds them back. All sessions are conducted in Gujarati, Hindi, and English.

Signs Your Child May Have Stammering

Normal developmental disfluency and stammering are different. Know what to look for.

Stammering Warning Signs

Repeating sounds, syllables, or words ("I-I-I want…")
Prolonging sounds ("Mmmmmy name is…")
Silent blocks — mouth open but no sound coming out
Facial tension, eye blinking, or head jerks while speaking
Avoids speaking in class, to strangers, or on the phone
Changes words or sentences to avoid difficult sounds
Stammering getting worse over time, not better
Child shows distress, frustration, or shame about speaking

If you noticed 3 or more of these signs persisting past age 5, a stammering assessment is recommended.

Our Stammering Therapy Approach

4 steps from fluency assessment to confident, free speech

  1. Fluency Assessment

A detailed evaluation of the type, frequency, and severity of stammering. We assess speech in multiple situations — conversation, reading, phone use, and classroom speech — to understand the full picture.

  2. Individualised Fluency Program

A personalized program combining fluency shaping techniques (breathing, gentle onset, easy speech rate) and stuttering modification strategies (reducing tension, desensitization). Goals are reviewed monthly.

  3. Structured Practice Sessions

60-minute sessions with structured speaking tasks — from single words to conversations to challenging social situations. Gradual exposure builds fluency and confidence in real-world settings, not just the therapy room.

  4. Confidence Coaching & Home Practice

Addressing the emotional impact of stammering — reducing avoidance, building communication confidence, and teaching parents how to create a supportive speaking environment at home. Daily practice is essential.

A Real Family's Story

★★★★★

"My son Raj, age 8, had severe stammering — he could not say his own name without repeating 4–5 times. He refused to speak in class and was very withdrawn. After 4 months at Kocoon Junior, his stammering has reduced by 80% and he raised his hand in class for the first time last week. The therapist worked on both his speech and his confidence — that made all the difference."

Stammering — Common Questions

Many children who receive early stammering therapy achieve completely fluent speech. The younger the child and the earlier therapy begins, the better the outcome. For some children, therapy significantly reduces stammering and builds strategies to manage remaining disfluency confidently — which is also a highly successful outcome. The goal at Kocoon Junior is both fluency improvement and emotional confidence — so stammering no longer limits what a child can say or do.
Stammering has multiple contributing factors — genetic predisposition, differences in speech-motor coordination, and environmental factors such as rapid language development, stress, or high speaking demands. It is not caused by anxiety, laziness, or a parenting failure. Stammering is a speech production difficulty. With the right therapy techniques, most children achieve significant fluency improvement — especially when therapy starts early.
Stammering therapy can begin from age 4. Early childhood (ages 4–7) is the most responsive period — many children who receive therapy during this window achieve spontaneous fluency recovery. For older children and adolescents, therapy focuses on fluency techniques, speech-motor control, and building the confidence to speak freely. Do not wait to see if stammering 'goes away on its own' past age 5 without professional guidance — early action gives the best outcomes.
