What is Special Education?

Individualised academic instruction designed to meet each child where they are — and help them achieve what standard classroom teaching cannot.

Special education refers to individualised academic instruction designed for children whose learning needs cannot be fully addressed by standard classroom teaching. Children who typically benefit include those with autism (ASD), ADHD, learning disabilities (such as dyslexia or dyscalculia), intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, or significant academic gaps from missed early learning. At Kocoon Junior, special education is delivered one-to-one in structured 60-minute sessions by trained special educators using evidence-based adaptive teaching methods.

Unlike mainstream classroom instruction — which assumes all children learn at the same pace and in the same way — special education adapts to the individual child's learning profile. We assess how a child learns best: through visual cues, repetition, multi-sensory activities, structured task analysis, or verbal instruction. The teaching method is shaped to match the child's learning style, not the other way around.

Our special education program is built around an Individualised Learning Plan — a structured, goal-based plan that identifies the child's current academic level, targets the specific skills to be developed, and outlines the teaching strategies that will be used. Plans cover reading, writing, numeracy, comprehension, and pre-academic skills as needed. Goals are reviewed monthly and updated as the child progresses.

Almost all children in our program continue in mainstream school alongside their Kocoon Junior sessions. We coordinate with parents on school curriculum so sessions directly support classroom progress. Many families report significant improvement in school performance within 3–4 months of consistent weekly sessions. Sessions available in Gujarati, Hindi, and English.

If 2 or more of these signs are present, a free learning assessment will clarify the support your child needs.

Our Special Education Approach

4 structured steps from learning assessment to measurable academic progress

  1. Learning Profile Assessment

A comprehensive evaluation of the child's current academic levels across reading, writing, numeracy, and comprehension. We also identify the child's preferred learning style, attention capacity, memory strengths, and how they process and retain information. School reports and parent feedback are reviewed.

  2. Individualised Learning Plan (ILP)

A structured, goal-based plan targeting the specific academic skills identified in the assessment. Goals are written in measurable terms — specific reading levels, writing tasks, numeracy milestones — with clear teaching strategies. Plans are reviewed monthly and shared with parents.

  3. One-to-One Structured Sessions

60-minute one-to-one sessions using adaptive teaching methods tailored to the child's learning profile — visual aids, task analysis, multi-sensory activities, and structured repetition as needed. Sessions systematically build academic skills from current level toward grade-appropriate targets.

  4. Home Practice & School Coordination

Parents receive reinforcement activities after every session. We coordinate with parents on school homework and upcoming curriculum topics so our sessions directly support classroom progress. Monthly progress reviews keep the plan aligned with evolving needs.

A Real Family's Story

★★★★★

"Our daughter Riya has autism and was completely unable to read at age 7. Her school said she may never read independently. After starting Special Education at Kocoon Junior, within 6 months she can read simple sentences and write her name and short words. The special educator understood exactly how Riya learns and used pictures and repetition in a way that actually worked. We are beyond grateful — this has changed her future."

Special Education — Common Questions

Special education refers to individualised academic instruction designed for children whose learning needs cannot be fully met by standard classroom teaching. Children who typically benefit include those with autism (ASD), ADHD, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or developmental delays. At Kocoon Junior, special education is delivered one-to-one using evidence-based adaptive teaching methods tailored to each child's specific learning profile.
Mainstream classroom teachers manage 30–40 students and cannot provide the individualised pace and teaching adjustments that children with special needs require. Our sessions are one-to-one, 60 minutes each, delivered by trained special educators using adaptive teaching methods. We work on the specific academic skills the child is finding most difficult — using teaching approaches that match how the child learns best, not how the classroom is structured.
