What is Occupational Therapy for Children?

OT equips children with the physical, sensory, and cognitive skills they need to participate fully in daily life — at home, in school, and at play.

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children develop the skills needed for everyday activities — from writing and dressing to sitting in class and playing with peers. At Kocoon Junior, our OT program addresses fine motor skills (hand strength, pencil grip, scissor use), gross motor skills (balance, coordination, core strength), sensory integration, and daily self-care activities (eating, dressing, toileting).

Every OT program begins with a thorough assessment that identifies exactly where the child's functional difficulties lie. A child who struggles with handwriting may have weak hand muscles, poor pencil grip, or a visual-motor integration problem — and each requires a different intervention. Our OTs determine the root cause before designing the program.

Kocoon Junior's OT sessions are activity-based and child-friendly. We use age-appropriate activities, sensory gym equipment, and structured games to build skills in a way that feels engaging and natural for children. Therapists explain every activity to parents so you understand exactly what we are working on and why.

OT is frequently combined with speech therapy or ABA therapy at Kocoon Junior — particularly for children with autism, developmental delays, or ADHD. When all therapists work from a single coordinated plan, progress is faster and more sustainable. All sessions are available in Gujarati, Hindi, and English.

Sensory Integration — A Core Part of Our OT Program

Sensory integration is the brain's ability to receive, process, and respond to information from the body and the environment — touch, sound, movement, gravity, and body position. When this process is disrupted, it affects how a child behaves, learns, and participates in daily life.

Children with sensory processing difficulties may be over-sensitive — covering their ears at normal sounds, refusing certain food textures, avoiding being touched — or under-sensitive — seeking intense sensory input, unaware of pain, or constantly moving and crashing into things. Both patterns affect a child's ability to focus, sit still, and engage in school and play.

At Kocoon Junior, sensory integration therapy is embedded within every OT program. Our therapists use structured sensory experiences — swinging, balance activities, tactile play, brushing, and weighted activities — to help the brain organize sensory information more effectively. Parents receive a daily sensory diet — a personalised schedule of sensory activities — to use at home.

Signs Your Child May Need Occupational Therapy

Many OT challenges are mistaken for behaviour problems or laziness. They are not — they are skill gaps that OT can address.

OT & Sensory Red Flags

Poor pencil grip or messy, illegible handwriting
Difficulty with buttons, zips, or tying shoelaces
Extreme sensitivity to touch, sound, light, or smell
Seeks intense physical input — crashing, jumping, spinning
Messy or very slow eater — difficulty with utensils
Poor balance or clumsiness — trips and bumps into things
Cannot sit still or maintain upright posture at a desk
Avoids or refuses craft activities, playground equipment

If you noticed 2 or more of these signs, an OT assessment is your best next step.

Our Occupational Therapy Approach

4 structured steps from OT evaluation to daily functional independence

  1. OT & Sensory Assessment

A comprehensive evaluation of fine motor, gross motor, sensory processing, visual-motor integration, self-care, and play skills. Parents are interviewed about home and school challenges. Takes 60 minutes.

  2. Individualized OT Program

A targeted program with specific, measurable goals — handwriting improvement, sensory regulation, self-care milestones. Goals are designed in collaboration with parents and reviewed monthly as the child progresses.

  3. Activity-Based Therapy Sessions

60-minute sessions using structured activities, sensory gym equipment, fine motor tasks, and play-based exercises. Each session builds specific skills in a way that is engaging and motivating for the child.

  4. Home Program & School Support

Parents receive a personalised home activity program after every session — including sensory diet activities for daily use. Where needed, written school recommendations are provided to support classroom participation.

A Real Family's Story

★★★★★

"My son Krish, age 5, was struggling badly with handwriting and could not sit still in class for more than 2 minutes. His teacher thought it was a behaviour problem. After 10 weeks of OT at Kocoon Junior, his handwriting has improved dramatically and he can sit through a full class period. The sensory activities they gave us to do at home every morning made the biggest difference."

Occupational Therapy — Common Questions

A pediatric occupational therapist helps children develop the skills needed for everyday activities — eating, writing, dressing, and playing. At Kocoon Junior, our OT program covers sensory integration (processing sensory information from the environment), fine motor skills (hand strength, pencil grip, cutting), gross motor skills (balance, coordination), and daily self-care. OT is often combined with speech therapy or ABA for children with autism or developmental delays.
Sensory integration is the brain's ability to receive, process, and respond to sensory information from the body and environment. When this process is disrupted, children may be over-sensitive (covering ears, avoiding touch, refusing certain foods) or under-sensitive (seeking intense sensory input, unaware of pain). Sensory integration therapy uses structured sensory experiences — swinging, brushing, tactile play, balance activities — to help the brain process sensory input more effectively. At Kocoon Junior, sensory integration is embedded within every OT program.
Physiotherapy focuses primarily on physical rehabilitation — strength, mobility, and pain reduction after injury or illness. Occupational therapy focuses on enabling children to perform daily activities and life skills. OT addresses the functional impact of physical, sensory, and cognitive challenges on a child's ability to participate in school, play, and self-care. For children with developmental delays, sensory issues, or autism, OT is typically more relevant than physiotherapy.
