What is Seating & Posture Problem Therapy?

An OT-based intervention that builds core strength and postural stability so children can sit, learn, and participate with confidence.

Seating and posture problems are among the most frequently reported concerns by teachers and parents of young children. A child who cannot maintain an upright seated posture often slides out of their chair, leans heavily on the desk, rests their head on one hand, or stands up and moves around constantly during class. These are not simply "bad habits" — they reflect genuine physical challenges in core muscle strength, postural stability, and sometimes sensory processing.

At Kocoon Junior, our Seating & Posture Problem program is a structured occupational therapy-based intervention that addresses the physical root causes of poor sitting. Every child begins with a postural assessment that evaluates core muscle strength, muscle tone, vestibular processing, and sensory seeking behaviour. This assessment drives a personalised strengthening and sensory program.

Therapy focuses on progressively strengthening the core and postural muscles that support upright sitting, combined with sensory regulation strategies to reduce the constant need for movement. Many children also benefit from specific seating modifications — our therapists provide written recommendations for appropriate school seating accommodations, including posture cushions or foot supports where needed.

The direct connection between postural stability and classroom attention is well-established: when a child can sit upright with minimal physical effort, more cognitive resources become available for learning. Improving posture consistently leads to improved attention, writing quality, and classroom participation. Home strengthening exercises are provided after every session to accelerate core muscle development. All sessions in Gujarati, Hindi, or English.

Signs Your Child Has a Seating or Posture Problem

These signs indicate a physical challenge with sitting that benefits from structured OT intervention.

Seating & Posture Red Flags

Cannot sit upright in a chair without slumping or leaning
Frequently slides off or falls out of the chair
Rests head on hand or arm while sitting at a desk
Stands up or moves around more than other children during class
Complains of back or neck pain after sitting for a short time
W-sitting (sitting with both legs folded outward) habitually
Tires quickly when sitting — prefers to lie down to work
Handwriting deteriorates significantly after 10–15 minutes

If 2 or more of these signs are consistently present, a free postural assessment is the right next step.

Our Seating & Posture Therapy Approach

4 structured steps from postural assessment to measurable sitting improvement

  1. Postural Assessment

A comprehensive OT evaluation of core muscle strength, muscle tone, vestibular processing, and sensory seeking behaviour. We also assess the child's current seating environment — desk height, chair size, foot support — and review school feedback on sitting behaviour.

  2. Personalised Strengthening Plan

A targeted program focused on the specific postural muscles identified as weak in the assessment. Goals include target sitting duration, postural alignment milestones, and sensory regulation strategies. School seating modification recommendations are prepared where appropriate.

  3. OT-Based Core & Posture Sessions

60-minute sessions combining core strengthening exercises, balance activities, proprioceptive input, and sensory regulation strategies. Sessions are structured and progressive — building postural endurance systematically alongside reducing the sensory need to move.

  4. Home Exercise Program & School Liaison

Parents receive a simple daily home strengthening program after every session. Where needed, our therapists provide written recommendations for teachers on classroom seating modifications. Core muscle development requires consistent daily practice to achieve lasting improvement.

A Real Family's Story

★★★★★

"Ishaan's teacher called us every month to say he could not sit in his chair during class. He was always sliding down or lying on the desk. We thought it was just a bad habit. After the postural assessment at Kocoon Junior Sanand, we learned his core muscles were very weak. After 3 months of the Seating & Posture program and daily exercises at home, he sits upright for 45 minutes now. His teacher cannot believe the difference."

Seating & Posture — Common Questions

Difficulty sitting still in many children is not a behaviour problem — it reflects poor core muscle strength, low muscle tone, vestibular processing difficulties, or sensory seeking behaviour. When a child cannot maintain an upright seated position without significant effort, they compensate by slouching, leaning, falling off chairs, or constantly moving. Our seating assessment identifies the underlying cause so therapy addresses the root issue, not just the symptom.
Maintaining an upright seated posture requires significant core muscle effort. When this effort is high, it diverts cognitive resources away from learning. A child struggling to stay upright has less brain capacity for listening, writing, and processing information — which is why children with seating problems often appear inattentive or easily distracted. Improving postural stability directly improves classroom focus and attention endurance.
Our occupational therapists assess each child's specific postural needs and recommend appropriate modifications — which may include postural support cushions, foot supports, adjusted desk height, or specific chair types. We provide written recommendations for school teachers so modifications can be implemented in the classroom. Equipment recommendations are always secondary to the primary goal of strengthening the child's core and postural muscles through therapy.
