What is Sensation Therapy?

A specialised sensory integration program that helps children whose nervous system struggles to process everyday sensory input.

Sensation therapy — also called sensory integration therapy — is a specialised form of occupational therapy that addresses how children receive, process, and respond to sensory information from the world around them. The seven senses involved are: touch (tactile), sound (auditory), sight (visual), movement (vestibular), gravity and balance (proprioceptive), smell (olfactory), and taste (gustatory).

When the nervous system processes sensory input incorrectly, children may experience the world as overwhelming or under-stimulating. A child who screams when their hair is brushed, refuses to wear certain clothes, covers their ears at normal sounds, or cannot sit still long enough to eat may have a sensory processing difficulty — not a behaviour problem.

At Kocoon Junior, sensation therapy uses carefully graded, structured sensory experiences to help the brain build more efficient sensory pathways. Our therapists work in a sensory-enriched environment using swings, textured materials, balance boards, weighted equipment, and tactile play — all sequenced to match the child's specific sensory profile.

Each child receives a personalised sensory diet — a daily schedule of specific sensory activities (heavy work, deep pressure, calming input) that parents implement at home. The sensory diet keeps the nervous system regulated throughout the day, improving focus, behaviour, and daily functioning. All sessions are conducted in Gujarati, Hindi, and English.

Signs Your Child May Have Sensory Processing Difficulties

Sensory issues often look like behaviour problems. Recognising the difference is the first step to getting the right help.

Sensory Processing Warning Signs

Extreme reaction to haircuts, hair brushing, or nail clipping
Refuses to wear certain clothing textures or seam-touched socks
Covers ears at normal household sounds
Constantly seeks intense input — crashing, spinning, hanging upside down
Extreme food texture refusal — very limited diet
Unaware of pain — does not react to injuries or temperature
Cannot tolerate busy or loud environments — malls, parties, classrooms
Constant movement — cannot sit still even for preferred activities

If you noticed 3 or more of these signs, a sensory assessment is your best next step.

Our Sensation Therapy Approach

4 steps from sensory profile to a regulated, focused child

  1. Sensory Profile Assessment

A detailed evaluation of how your child processes each sensory system — identifying over-sensitive, under-sensitive, and sensory-seeking patterns across touch, movement, sound, sight, and body position.

  2. Personalised Sensory Diet Plan

A tailored daily schedule of sensory activities designed to keep your child's nervous system in an optimal state of regulation — timed to their needs across morning routine, school transitions, mealtimes, and bedtime.

  3. Sensory Integration Sessions

60-minute sessions using graded sensory experiences — swings, textured play, deep pressure, weighted activities, balance challenges — all sequenced to gradually improve the brain's ability to process sensory input efficiently.

  4. Parent Training & School Support

Parents are trained to implement the sensory diet daily and to modify the home environment to support regulation. Written recommendations are provided to schools where sensory adaptations are needed in the classroom.

A Real Family's Story

★★★★★

"Our daughter Mia, age 4, would scream every morning when we brushed her hair or changed her clothes. She refused to eat anything that was not smooth. We thought it was stubbornness. After sensation therapy at Kocoon Junior, we learned she had sensory processing difficulties. The sensory diet they gave us to do every morning changed her entire day — she is so much calmer now."

Sensation Therapy — Common Questions

Sensation therapy is a specialised form of occupational therapy that focuses on how children process and respond to sensory input — touch, sound, movement, sight, taste, and body position. When sensory processing is disrupted, children may react strongly to ordinary sensory experiences or seek out intense stimulation. Sensation therapy uses structured, graded sensory experiences to help the nervous system regulate sensory input more effectively, resulting in calmer, more focused, and more adaptive behaviour.
Sensation therapy is a specialised sub-set of occupational therapy (OT) that focuses specifically on sensory processing and regulation. All sensation therapy at Kocoon Junior is delivered by our occupational therapists within the OT framework. Children who present primarily with sensory difficulties — rather than motor or self-care challenges — benefit from session focus concentrated on sensory work, which is what the Sensation Therapy program provides.
A sensory diet is a personalised schedule of sensory activities designed to keep a child's nervous system in an optimal state of alertness throughout the day. It includes specific physical activities — heavy work, deep pressure, swinging, or calming tactile input — timed to the child's sensory needs at different points in the day (morning routine, school, after-school, bedtime). Our therapists design and teach parents to implement the sensory diet at home and, where needed, at school.
